Introduction

Water scarcity is a growing problem in many parts of the world, and conflicts and climate change are exacerbating the issue. In addition, water pollution is a significant challenge that affects human health and the environment in many countries. Achieving universal coverage by 2030 will require a six fold increase incurrent global rates of progress on drinking water, a fivefold increase for sanitation and a threefold increase for hygiene. Lack of access to safe water also affects the physical well-being of women and children who have no choice but to carry heavy vessels long distances. Now more than ever, access to safe water is critical to the health of families around the world. A lack of access to safe water and sanitation significantly affects the health of women as well. Burdened daily by water collection and finding a place to go, women and girls spend large amounts of time carrying heavy vessels and walking long distances. Contaminated water and poor sanitation are linked to transmission of diseases such as cholera, diarrhoea, dysentery, hepatitis A, typhoid and polio.

Objective

Safe water and sanitation are essential for human health and well-being and is a human right. They can also help create resilient communities and contribute to school attendance, livelihoods, and dignity. The objective of this session is to present how the challenges related to clean water and sanitation was addressed holistically in the country. There was a low awareness about the need for environmental protection and the link between water, sanitation, hygiene and health. How continuous awareness raising and advocacy towards citizens and decision makers on the human right to water and sanitation, contributes to adequate policy making and effective implementation. In this side event we analyse the policies and programmes in India related to the human right to Water and Sanitation especially with its implication on human health.
