Enhancing awareness about Sustainable Development Goals and Climate Change

Introduction

India Water Foundation, established in 2008 as a non- profit civil society & think tank, is engaged in enhancing public awareness about Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and major components of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, in Asia-Pacific region in general and India in particular. It also emphasizes on familiarizing the people regarding the vital role water, energy and environment play in human lives, their impact on health, economic growth, livelihoods of the people and calamities that wreak havoc due to non-judicious harnessing of these natural resources.

This document presents the membership policy of the India Water Foundation, and establishes the principles of the membership as well as transparent procedures for the relationship between the IWF and its members. This document is complementary to the By-Laws and Constitution of the IWF.

Missions of the IWF / General Principles

The India Water Foundation serves as a leader, uniting key stakeholders to develop strategies for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at local, national, regional and global levels. Similarly, the India Water Foundation (IWF) acts as a catalyst for its members and partners, fostering collaborative initiatives to improve the management of natural resources and ensure equitable access to essential services.

IWF’s mission focuses on localizing and implementing SDGs by working directly with grassroots communities, particularly marginalized and vulnerable groups, in collaboration with local, state, and national governments, as well as like-minded civil society organizations (CSOs). Its efforts aim to promote efficient resource use, enhance access to sustainable inputs and practices, minimize environmental and climate impacts, and improve livelihoods through innovative technologies and practices.

By forging partnerships across stakeholders at national and international levels, IWF drives its mission forward. To fulfill its objectives, IWF must maintain democratic and financial independence, supported by a robust membership base and annual membership contributions. Additionally, it relies on a diverse international network of members to collaborate on joint activities and develop impactful projects addressing critical issues.

Whether interested in technical solutions for environment improvement, policy development for sustainable development, or community-based conservation efforts, IWF provides the platform, resources, and network needed to transform your commitment to holistic sustainability into tangible impact. Through collaborative projects and shared expertise, members help shape the future of water resource management while addressing pressing environmental challenges.

Membership Core Values

The India Water Foundation’s members are expected to embrace a set of core values that will guide their work:

  • Accept, endorse and support the missions and objectives of IWF as set out in its By-laws and Constitution;
  • Advocate for the acknowledgment of SDGs as an essential human right;
  • Facilitate dialogue in an open manner, especially on sensitive issues;
  • Welcome dialogue with all stakeholders, recognizing the value of considering diverse points of view;
  • Respect and endorse decisions which are taken in a democratic way;
  • Behave ethically, treat individuals and differences with respect, honesty and integrity;
  • Act with transparency in favour of the IWF’s interest.

Members

Members are individuals/organizations that maintain current status with their annual membership fees and actively support the achievement of IWF’s goals. A member organization/individual has one full year to pay its membership fees. After 3 months of non-payment, they will no longer be considered as members. Members are grouped into six distinct categories, defined as follows:

Companies

Companies that are engaged in industry, services, commercial enterprise or trade activity.

Company Categories Based on Annual Turnover

  • Company Category A: With annual turnover up to 0.5 million US $
  • Company Category B: With annual turnover between 0.5 and 5 million US $
  • Company Category C: With annual turnover between 5 million and 10 million US$
  • Company Category D: With annual turnover above 10 million US$
school

Institutions

Organizations focused on scientific, research, academic, technical, professional, or related fields, including entities such as professional associations, universities, schools, and research and training centers.

Institution Categories Based on Employee Count

  • Institution Category A: With 25 employees
  • Institution Category B: With 25-50 employees
  • Institution Category C: With 50 and above employees

Individuals/Retiree/Young Professionals

Membership is open to Young Professionals, practicing individuals, and retired professionals. Retired members are defined as those aged 65 or older; while Young Professional Members are under 35 years of age; and ordinary members include those who do not fall into the Young Professional or Retired Professional categories.

Membership is open to anyone who is involved in efforts to localize and implement Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), working at the grassroots level, particularly with marginalized and vulnerable communities, in collaboration with local, state, and national governments, as well as like-minded civil society organizations (CSOs). Their work focuses on promoting efficient resource use, increasing access to sustainable practices, reducing environmental and climate impacts, and enhancing livelihoods through innovative technologies and approaches.

NGO/CSO/NPO

Non-governmental, civil society organizations, non-profit organizations focused on utilizing, learning, training, informing, and advocating to promote the protection and advancement of the common public good. Examples include foundations, charities, cultural, social, and environmental groups, as well as consumer associations.

Government organizations and PSUs

Government departments or agencies at the state, interstate, regional, provincial, or local levels that promote government interests by advocating for, developing, and implementing policies, cooperation strategies, and programs at international, regional, national, and local levels. Examples include state agencies, ministries, regional and local authorities, municipalities, parliamentary associations, national development agencies, and state-sponsored organizations.

Intergovernmental Organizations

Intergovernmental organizations that are engaged across several countries which monitor, regulate and, or finance projects, policies and cooperation strategies. Such as: UN agencies, intergovernmental institutions, international financial institutions and development banks, etc.
An inter-governmental organization is an entity established by formal political agreements between their members that have the status of international treaties, their existence is recognized by law in their member states, and they are not treated as resident institutional units of the country in which they are officially settled through a headquarters agreement.

  • Intergovernmental organizations A: With annual budget less than 10 million USD
  • Intergovernmental organizations B: With annual budget more than 10 million USD

Conditions for Application and Admission

IWF membership is open to any organization committed to sustainable human development and the SDGs, provided they accept the mission and objectives outlined in the IWF Constitution and By-Laws. Interested organizations must begin by completing the membership application form available on the IWF website. To finalize their application, organizations are required to submit the original form, fully completed and signed by their Chief Executive Officer or equivalent, along with details about the organization and its sustainability-related initiatives. If the submitted documents and information on the organization’s website are deemed insufficient, the IWF reserves the right to request additional details or clarifications from the applicant.

Acceptance

If the new applicants provide all the necessary documents and fulfil the criteria as set out in the By-Laws and in this document, the applications are put forth for review. Once reviewed by the reviewing committee, the application is submitted to the Board for adoption or rejection. Once applications are approved, applicants are considered to be officially members subject to the payment of their membership fees.

Re-admission

Organizations that wish to renew their membership after having cancelled it or after having had their member status removed for non-payment of fees may apply again through the same procedure as is set out above.

  • Highlight members’ achievements on social media or newsletters.
  • Give members the opportunity to serve on advisory panels or committees.
  • Members can contribute to policy recommendations or advocacy campaigns.
  • Opportunity to contribute to the biannual Magazine ‘Chronicle’
  • Early access to event reports
  • Concessional advertisement rates at the IWF publications
  • Free and early access to IWF online publications
  • Special exhibition rates and registration fees during IWF events
  • Participate in Webinars
  • Use of the name and logo by prior information
  • Priority nomination for awards and prizes
  • Opportunity to display work at events

* Except when hardcopies are requested, nominal charges plus postal charges will have to be paid.

Obligations

  • Payment of fees: The main obligation for a member is to pay its annual membership fees in order to remain active and benefit from full members’ rights. Members have 3 months in which to pay their fees in order to remain active. However, they benefit from a 5% discount if they pay the fees for the three coming years in a single instalment.
  • Facilitating the objectives and the mission of IWF: Members are required to support and facilitate the objectives and activities of IWF. This is partly achieved through their active participation in the members meetings, and partly through members’ activities undertaken as specific contributions to the IWF’s activities. Members can propose new activities or working themes and are also greatly encouraged to advertise the IWF’s activities on their website and disseminate the IWF’s engagements.
  • Keeping detailed information updated: Members are required to inform IWF of any change in their contact person as well as in the name of the organization, the postal address, the email address, and telephone and fax numbers.
  • Member Code: Each member is attributed a member code upon admission to the IWF and is requested to indicate this code with payments, and in all correspondence with IWF.

Resignation and Member Status Removal

  • Resignation: Any member may cancel its membership simply by informing IWF by letter or e-mail. The cancellation will be officially validated at the following member meeting.
  • Member status removal: Member status may be removed from an organization by a decision of the Board for either of the following reasons:
    1. If their activities become contradictory with the mission of IWF;
    2. If they do not pay their membership fees for more than 3 months from the date of acceptance for the membership.

Invoicing and Payment

Pro-forma invoices for membership fees are sent to members at the beginning of each year. Members have the option of paying their membership fees for the three coming years in a single instalment and benefit from a 10% discount. Upon receipt of payment, IWF sends a pre-paid invoice. Invoices are issued in USD. However, members can pay their fees in any other currency using the exchange rate valid for the date of payment. Members may pay their fees by bank transfer.
